Virtual round the world cycling with the Oculus Rift




A group of developers has virtual bike rides designed for use with the Oculus Rift. Through a link between the bike and the VR goggles users can work simultaneously and the virtual world around bikes. There is also support for the Samsung Gear VR.

Widerun hopes with a Kickstarter campaign to raise 30,000 pounds, converted about 41,000 euros. Those interested in sports kit of Widerun must deposit 300 pounds, about 410 euros. To this end buyers get a standard where they can use their bicycle, making it in fact can be used as a kind of exercise bike. The trainer provides resistance so that the system knows how fast is about cycling.

The information of the cyclist is then forwarded to the Oculus Rift. On the VR goggles, users see a cycle where the rate is based on the input provided by the trainer. So you get the feeling that you’re the trek to the business itself. There are several possible locations and can be cycled together with friends, so it can be that your virtual by someone cycled past. In the demonstration video Widerun released shows how that about looks.

Besides the Oculus Rift is also supported Samsung Gear VR. Widerun hopes in the future to further VR goggles going support. Whoever finds the virtual experience too much otherwise the image may simply stream TV.

If Widerun achieve his Kickstarter Goal buyers should still have some patience before they can start their virtual cycling. Adjust the bike system is delivered over a year.
