VLC developers are looking for solutions to problems on Huawei phones

team behind media player VLC says that it is talking to Huawei and is looking for a solution for the phenomenon that recent devices aggressively shut down background activities, which causes problems with VLC. The team therefore blocked certain Huawei devices.

VideoLan, the organization behind VLC, reports via a message on Twitter that contact has been made with Huawei and that they hope to find a solution in the coming weeks. It is unknown what the position of Huawei is. The VLC team made the decision to block certain devices from the Chinese manufacturer known Wednesday in a series of tweets .

In it, the developers wrote that they have switched to blocking because the Android system on recent Huawei devices has an aggressive policy regarding apps that run in the background. Presumably this happens to reduce energy consumption. However, that policy would also ensure that VLC can no longer play audio as soon as the screen goes out, according to one of the various forum posts on the subject.

In response to tweets, the VLC team wrote that users with a P8, P10 and P20 can no longer download the app from the Play Store and referred them to the apk on their site. In addition, it says that his software gets a bad reputation if it does not work on certain devices. It would therefore be a ‘proportional decision’ to block phones on which the software is causing problems.

The team claimed that it had contacted Huawei and that the Chinese manufacturer refused to add VLC to its whitelist for apps that are excluded from the shutdown policy. Whether that has happened is unclear.
