VMware Player logo (75 pix) VMware has released the first update for version 15 Workstation Player. Player is free software that allows virtual machines to be created and run. However, a fee is required for commercial use. It is simply a simplified implementation of other VMware products, such as Workstation Pro , Server and ESX Server. The virtual machines from Microsoft Virtual PC and Symantec LiveState Recovery disks are also supported. In addition, various pre-installed virtual machines can be downloaded via this page , such as Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora. In version 15.0.1 a security problem has been solved and support for various new guest systems has been added.

This release of VMware Workstation Player addresses the following issue:

VMware Workstation Player has an uninitialized stack memory usage vulnerability in the vmxnet3 virtual network adapter that could allow guest to execute code on the host. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project ( cve.mitre.org ) has assigned the identifier CVE-2018-6981 to this issue.
