Vodafone registers SMS WhatsApp interference peaks during New Year’s Eve

Vodafone has some significant peaks in SMS traffic recorded in the hours leading up to the New Year. Customers massively switched to texting while WhatsApp interference. The traffic through the 4G network increased by 114 percent compared to last year.

Not only during the New Year, around noon, but in the hours previously registered Vodafone peaks in SMS traffic, up to 33 percent higher than average. The timings of these, around 17:30, 19:00 and 21:00 are similar to those covered by WhatsApp with failures faced. Because of that failure, users could not connect and not send messages, after which they massively switched to alternatives such as SMS. Around midnight WhatsApp had no faults and was the service or to the crowds.

Despite the unexpected peaks in SMS traffic, the number of sent SMS messages increased or decreased compared to last year, with 30 percent. Each year, reduces the number of text messages sent around the turn of the year, because people are increasingly using instant messaging services such as WhatsApp. Between 18:00 and 04:00 processed the 4G network of Vodafone more than 30 terabytes of Internet traffic, which was an increase of 114 percent compared to last year. The number of mobile calls decreased by the provider with 3.6 percent to 7 million.
