Vodafone will warn against calls to some foreign numbers

Vodafone will send a warning to Dutch customers calling a potentially fraudulent foreign number that the call can lead to high costs. This happens before the connection is established. The provider wants to prevent phone fraud.

The announcement reads: “Please note, you are calling a foreign number, which may involve high costs, but if you do not, please disconnect the connection, ” Vodafone says . The announcement does not mention anything about possible telephone fraud, although it is the intention to counteract it, the provider says.

At that call fraud fraudsters call a Dutch mobile number and let the phone ring once, and then hang up. If Dutch victims then call back, they call a pay number of which the proceeds go partly to the scammers.

Blocking those numbers is difficult because they often exchange numbers. The measure must reduce the number of victims of call fraud and also reduce the number of complaints that the provider receives.
