VVD and D66 want citizens to manage ‘digital safe’ with personal data themselves

VVD and D66 propose the plan that Dutch citizens get the management of their own digital vault containing their personal data. Several government agencies would have to rely on the data in that safe.

Such an account with personal data must guarantee the citizen and the government that the information is correct, the members of parliament VVD and Verhoeven of the Dutch parliament VVD and RTL argue against RTL. According to them, it is now common practice for public authorities to have different data from the same person, which can lead to administrative and financial problems.

An additional advantage, according to the MPs, is that citizens can see which authority uses the correct data. The politicians call State Secretary Knops of the Interior to come up with a plan based on their proposal. This could be included in the review of the Basic Registration Persons, or BRP.

According to Middendorp and Verhoeven it is necessary that the security of DigiD is improved. For example, they suggest that two-stage authentication becomes standard and that there is a possibility to log in by scanning the nfc chip of passports. Incidentally, the government has already agreed that the security of DigiD will be adjusted and that only entering the password and the login name will be inadequate.
