Water on Mars: new assumptions





New information received from the Martian satellite orbit NASA can indirectly say that Mars is still present in the water to its liquid form, and if not on the planet, at least for some parts of its surface. By this assumption scientists led by recent satellite imagery Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and Mars Odyssey, orbiting a nearby world and provide a detailed picture of the annual seasonal changes on Mars.

After reviewing the photo was taken, scientists noticed a strong indication that the surface of Mars may be liquid water. Researchers have noted that structural formations that could contain water, typically in the photographs presented darker long and elongated areas arising mainly at various slopes with increasing temperature.


Scientists believe that changes in the color of the surface may be an indication of freezing and thawing of the chemical elements, which occurs simultaneously with changes in temperature indicators in these areas. According to scientists, the liquid – potentially water – runs down these slopes and forms narrow channels, which can be seen from space. With the change of seasons, these channels appear and disappear.
MRO spacecraft and Mars Odyssey could mention another such seasonal changes on the planet’s surface, which, among other things, accompanied by changes in the volume of iron minerals along the same slope and the change of the landscape itself. On the surface there was a lot of fine channels that among scholars are called “lines, repeating outlines slopes» (recurring slope lineae – RSL).

Scientists, however, have not yet come to a consensus that can form these lines. Some experts believe that this surface structure is formed due to the impact on the area of ​​rapeseed (very salty liquids) containing a substance that lowers the freezing point, minerals including iron, like the same sulfate. Many other researchers, in turn, explain the presence of lines as a result of exposure to flowing fluids.

“We still can not with absolute certainty that the line is responsible for the formation of water. On the other hand, we are not quite sure how this process would have been possible without her presence, “- explains Ludzhendra Oja, a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and lead author of the two reports, which, along with James Ray, associate professor of the Institute, studied pictures of seasonal changes Martian surface obtained HiRISE camera and CRISM, mounted on space interplanetary spacecraft MRO.

“Together with the seasonal changes themselves RSL, changing and power spectral parameters of these areas. They are more distinct when the surface becomes warmer and less distinct when cooling occurs on the surface “- continues Oja.

“Detection of water flow or even flow of brine anywhere on Mars would be for all of us the most important discovery in the study of this planet. This discovery will allow us not only to better understand the process of climate change on the Red Planet, but also become a very serious indicator of the existence of life on Mars, “- said Richard Zurek, the employee’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and one of the project staff MRO.
