WD began shipping 5mm drives for ultrabooks

Western Digital has started shipping the thinnest in the world series of drives for ultrabooks. The thickness of the new disc is only 5 mm, which is 2 mm thinner than any other 2.5-inch counterpart, presented today at the market.

Most two-platter hard drives for laptops in the form factor of 2.5 “and a thickness of 9.5 millimeters 7. In a new series of drives includes: WD Blue hard drive and a hybrid SSD WD Black SSHD, combines NAND flash memory and a traditional spinning disk. Both solutions offer a capacity of 500 GB.

“For 5-mm disc, our engineers have applied a new approach. Ultra-thin hard drive offers plenty of opportunities for use in mobile devices and not only, “- said vice-president of Western Digital Matt Rutledge.


The use of these drives will reduce the height of the slot in Ultrabooks. The compact form factor of the mechanical connector SFF-8784 with a height of 5 mm provides system designers more freedom and reduces product weight by 36 percent, compared with a standard 9.5-mm disc.

WD Blue drives and WD Black 5mm also withstand loads of up to 400G and 1000G, respectively. StableTrac technology reduces vibration and noise, increasing productivity.

WD Blue (WD5000MPCK) offered at a retail price of $ 89, plus a two year warranty. Cost WD Black SSHD was not announced. The drives are currently shipping to manufacturers and system builders. For more information on Western Digital products can be found at wd.com.
