What will be the future of communication?
Fifty years ago, our methods of communication would be considered science fiction. Today you can buy a smart phone and use it to call, sit on the internet, play games, run applications and do more than most ambitious science fiction writer could imagine. What’s next?
In the near future, most likely, we’ll see how cell phones are slowly disappearing. Since smartphones are becoming more common and cheaper, more and more people accept them. This process increases. If you think that this technological domain is not new, think again. The first iPhone was introduced only six years ago. As with many new technologies, there is always a group of enthusiasts who head the procession. Sometimes the whole crowd goes for pioneers – CDs great example. In other cases, the technology becomes obsolete before gain wide acceptance – as an example, laser discs.
Smartphones are in the first category. Google Android and, in fact, iPhone brought the device for fans of the broader market. In 2010 came the first smartphone that can run on the network 4G. It was the HTC EVO 4G, and now 4G is very common in the U.S. and Europe.
Internet will play a huge role in communications. Voice VoIP protocols already played a significant role in many services and products. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow people to communicate with others from the comfort of home. In the past, only the politicians could apply to many people at once. Today, it can make everyone – thanks to the Internet.
Of course, all this will lead to certain changes in all fields, from entertainment to politics. Revolution happening with Twitter, information scatters faster than word of mouth, and we all write and write. But what happens next? Even further? Yet-another?
In anticipation of the future of communications
The first thing that awaits us in the near future – it’s augmented reality. In an augmented reality system, you can look at the world through technological layer. It can take the form of a smartphone – some of the augmented reality applications already exist. Another option – augmented reality glasses. As you know, Google Glass became the first bell . You can look around at the world and see real-time digital information about what to see.
A classic example of augmented reality is a review of a restaurant. You can stay in front of the restaurant and, using a system of augmented reality, read reviews or see the menu without having to go inside. However, applications should not be limited to the location. Augmented reality can spread to humans . Imagine that you are looking at a stranger and you see his name, a profile in Facebook, Twitter nickname and other information. Obviously, the system is augmented reality will have security problems, but think about this for authorities.
Now imagine the future of video conferencing. Despite the fact that this technology has been around for a long time, it is not particularly popular. Perhaps because the hardware does not work all that well, or cost too much. But today, webcams have become the standard for many laptops and even televisions. So we are preparing to enter the era of video conferencing, like those that were in the “Star Trek” ? Or no one wants to smarten up every time you want to order a pizza?
One of the disadvantages of video conferencing is that you have to stay in one place for a long period, or to keep the device so that you have ever seen. Do we get used to videoconferencing as accustomed to the chatter on the phone? Hardly. Perhaps the video will become a special part of the future for special occasions or short talks. No wonder Microsoft is seriously puzzled workers telepresence .
Language barriers should also disappear. It is necessary to believe in the very near future there will be a device that can translate languages minutely, thereby negating the need to go with an interpreter for people of different countries.
In the distant future we will be able to communicate by sending thoughts directly into someone else’s brain. We separated for decades from such technologies, but scientists are working to develop a brain-computer interfaces that will allow people to give commands to the computer directly. Telepathy will be available within 50 years.
Communication technologies are developing by leaps and bounds. Of course, it may be so, that our predictions will be wrong. Time will tell.
