WhatsApp comes with option to reduce data usage during call

WhatsApp has a put option on its Android and iOS apps to save data while using the call function. This Low Data Usage adds additional compression to the data to reduce such data use.

The option is not in the version of WhatsApp in the Play Store state, but is already in version 2.12.183, a build offering WhatsApp via the Website , discovered the Dutch site DroidApp. The option can be found in the settings at the bottom of the list of options under Chats and Calls.

Although the only option now appears in the public version of WhatsApp for Android, it surfaced earlier in a beta of WhatsApp for iOS. There you can find the setting in the same place. From version 2.12.5 to use this option on iPhones.

During a test call of 2.25 minutes, where the conversation consisted of the tune of the comedy series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the call to 700KB of data used. The option was that around 920KB. The test is done on an Android device through 4g. There was no apparent difference in audible sound quality between the two options.

WhatsApp comes presumably with the option, in order to allow telephone calls to slower data connections. Also to exceed those with tight data bundle as no longer call their limit. When the function in the WhatsApp versions in the App Store and Play Store will appear is unknown.

WhatsApp founder Jan Koum Tweakers confirmed to the development of the function. Koum stressed that it does not affect the size of photos or chats. “It only works during calls,” says Koum.
