WhatsApp has added a feature to its Android beta version that warns users about “suspicious links.” If someone shares such a link in a chat, the app shows a red alert tag.

The function was discovered by WABetainfo . The site reports that if WhatsApp detects a suspicious link, a red warning label about the preview of the link is placed. If the recipient still presses the link, the chat app displays a more detailed warning. For example, WABetainfo tested a link with suspicious characters, which are also mentioned in the second warning. The function may only extend to this type of links and not domains that are on a black list, for example.

It is unclear how WhatsApp wants to label links as ‘suspicious’. WABetainfo claims that checking of sent links takes place locally and that no data is sent to the WhatsApp servers. The site also reports that the function is still under development and that changes may be made in the future, such as a possibility to manually report suspicious links.
