Find a Question:
Why Moscow subway system that monitors the phone?
Yesterday it was reported that the Moscow authorities plan to equip the new Metro-tracking system, ostensibly to search for stolen phones. But no one believes in the true purpose of this venture. Looks like Capital Metro wants to enter the list of the most extraordinary underground world . But it is unlikely.
As reported by “Izvestia”, the new system will work in a range of five meters. The system will automatically record the SIM-card, which are in search and track movement. Here’s what Andrew said Mokhov, Operations Chief Police Moscow metro:
“To view the sensors must be installed on all CCTV cameras at stations, subway cars and lobbies. If a man has stolen the phone and he appealed to the police on duty immediately score the cell phone number into the system, and that will show the station, which was recorded this “sim”. A police officer will be able to view the images from the cameras at the time when the sensor fixed the map to identify the suspects and to direct the orientation of colleagues at the station to which the offender can go further. It does not matter enabled phone or not. The main thing that remained inside the SIM-card. ”
Foreign experts, however, believe that local authorities are actually deploying “Stingray” or “search engine IMSI» – a device that can trick the phone and “Simcoe”, guiding them to a dummy mobile tower. IMSI – this is a 15-digit unique number, which is equipped with every SIM-card. Such a device can easily be used to see which numbers are used in the selected area or even intercept voice calls.
“Many surveillance technologies are created and deployed for legitimate purposes, but the deployment of IMSI-searchers not only proportionally, but do not need to identify stolen phones,” – said Eric King of Privacy International.
The Executive Director of the Security Industry Association, Alexander Ivanchenko believes that the effective operation of the system need a lot of sensors.
“If the operating range is 5 m, they must be installed every 10 meters – said Ivanchenko. – Otherwise, the route will be inaccurate and catch the right person among the many millions of passenger station will be absolutely impossible. ”
The expert suggested that the system is not created for the search of mobile phones, its purpose – to provide a high level of control of security forces.
“Obviously, the cost of the system is not commensurate with the value of all the stolen phones – says Ivanchenko. – Also effective anti-theft technology already known: in the U.S., for example, the owner of the stolen phone is enough to call the operator – and the stolen device stops working, even if it insert another SIM-card. ”
But the metro Los Angeles received a ” perpetual motion machine “. But it was so long ago that no one remembers.
