Xbox chief hint at hardware upgrades for consoles
Xbox chief Phil Spencer reports that Microsoft could add half generations consoles new hardware capabilities to support newer games. He made the statement at the announcement of Gears of War for Windows 10.
According to Spencer, there is less innovation on consoles than on mobile or PC. “We look at other platforms that you get continuous innovation that you can barely see on consoles,” he said according to Polygon with an Xbox event. “Consoles put the hardware and software platforms at the beginning of a generation locked. Then you have as a user serving seven years or so, while other ecosystems are better, faster and stronger,” he further said.
The CEO believes that the coming years will change: “You will see that we release new hardware capabilities for a generation that games are backwards and forwards compatible.” This would be supported by the Universal Windows platform because Microsoft is thus to focus on the hardware without worrying new hardware to ensure that games do not work anymore.
