YouTube and Facebook would work on systems to automatically extremist content, such as videos of the Islamic State, identify and block the same way as, for example, now comes with copyrighted material.

The companies make the news not officially known, possibly because their definition of what is soon and does not fall could be under the heading “extremist content” in the eyes of the public or other parties at odds with the freedom of expression. The information comes out through anonymous sources Reuters.

At the time confidence YouTube and Facebook are on the “human hand” when it comes to combating extremist content. Users report it to YouTube and Facebook, and employees of those companies assess their content against the terms of use in or not. In the future, these systems must as far as possible be automated: Videos labeled as “not acceptable”, are assigned a hash, similar to how it goes with obviously illegal material such as child pornography or illegal copies of copyrighted work. Based on that hash can reposts of the extremist content, even if they are adjusted automatically identified and quickly and removed.

The moves come after US President Obama and European leaders requested the urgent companies to cooperate in combating extremist content, for example, the Islamic State. The US has for example already made a proposal for a system to throttle the content in the bud as much as possible, but Alphabet and Facebook are never served by control by governments. Instead, the companies see in a joint development organization that formulated the task of policy and strategy assumes. Whether there actually is, is not known at this time. According to sources, YouTube and Facebook would at least begin hashing in their eyes extremist content.
