Zeiss allows for Batis 18mm f / 2.8 using his Distagon lens design. The optical construction features eleven elements in ten groups. Four lens elements are aspherical and the minimum focusing distance is 25cm. The lens weighs 330 grams and is sealed against dust and moisture. There threaded filters from 77mm to 18mm to be used.

The 18mm f / 2.8 lens is the third in the series Batis. Earlier Zeiss brought a 25mm f / 2.0 and 85mm f / 1.8 in. Like those objectives, the new wide-angle lens has an OLED screen on which information on the focal length and the aperture is displayed. Also it has autofocus lens and an electronic diaphragm, in contrast to most other Zeiss-lenses that have been manually.

The lens is suitable for cameras with Sony E-mount lens. Zeiss is aiming especially at users of high-end full-frame cameras like the A7R II, which has a 42.2-megapixel sensor. The Batis 18mm f / 2.8 is on sale from May for a suggested retail price of 1525 euros.
